Textile & clothing class at Iowa State University, 1956

I discovered my mother’s final project for her Textile and Clothing class. She got a B on the project, even though it looks like many of the drawings are hand-drawn and she even hand-painted some of the images. There are so many gems in this notebook that it was hard to choose what to post. My, how times have changed….

The instructor wrote, “Objectives–but not a chart as to how maintained.” (Maybe that’s why she got a B.)

This is a little embarrassing, but none of you know who my mother is…

These are examples of “Gamin.” Ever heard of it?

Mom hand-painted this page–“Color Harmonies in Clothes.” The styles (from left to right) are: Dramatic, Reserved, Youthful, and Demure.

She got a B on the project, but her Blouses page earned her a B+. (Unfortunately, after 53 years her scotch tape has yellowed.)

“Informal Balance.” Women’s clothes were so elegant then….sigh.

“My coloring is warm but with a little pink in it. I can wear almost any color except very dainty or pale, washed-out ones. Bright intensities look best on me. A light, bright blue is probably my favorite color because it makes my eyes seem more blue and gives more color to my face. I’m Classic with some Athletic and Gamin. My hair is a dark brown with some light streaks and some gray.”

Mom got a B– on this page. The instructor wrote, “Too many neutrals cut down on interest.”

Bah humbug! I think she did a fabulous job.
