The power of square energy: Strength, stability, and boundaries
In my work with clients, the metaphor of the Square frequently emerges as a powerful image. You might assume that in today’s hyper-linear, fast-paced world, square energy—symbolizing structure and stability—would come naturally to most of us. But the truth is, it doesn’t.
Many of my workshop participants admit they “hate” squares. They prefer circles or spirals, viewing squares as rigid, masculine, or even “un-spiritual.” When square imagery arises, they often try to soften the edges or transform it into something more fluid.
Yet, for creative and visionary individuals, the square is indispensable.
Why Square Energy Matters
The square represents strength, stability, and safety. It symbolizes the ability to hold clear boundaries without wobbling—a critical skill for navigating today’s chaotic world. Square energy is masculine, sturdy, and protective, allowing us to stand firm against external chaos, internal traumas, or the pressures of others’ opinions. When you push on something square, it doesn’t tip or wobble.
Square energy becomes especially important in times of:
- Anxiety or overwhelm
- Difficulty setting boundaries or saying no
- Building or creating something meaningful
- Addressing addictive tendencies
In our current world, filled with daily doses of fear—climate change, extremism, authoritarianism, and more—we need the sturdy, grounding presence of square energy more than ever. It’s not about limitation; it’s about creating the structure that allows us to thrive.
Connecting with Square Energy
Square energy can be found in images of buildings, houses, boxes, tables, doorframes, or windows. These symbols ground us and evoke feelings of clarity and safety.
TRY THIS…
On a piece of paper, slowly draw an image of a square in a conscious and meditative way. Pay attention to the size of the square you feel drawn to create—this is a metaphorical clue about what your inner self needs right now.
As you draw, notice the square’s clarity, definition, and focus. When you embody square energy in your life, you cultivate this same sense of clarity and structure.
To strengthen square energy in your daily life:
- Create a schedule or plan
- Set clear boundaries for tasks or relationships
- Define specific times for focused activities (e.g., use a timer for work sessions)
And remember: you are not “inside” the square—you ARE the square. There’s a profound difference. Embracing this metaphor helps you anchor into your own strength and stability.
Why the Square Is Vital for Visionaries
While circles and spirals are beautiful and fluid, the square is the foundation for creating and building. Without it, we lack the structure needed to realize our visions.
Interestingly, a lack of square energy can lead to acting out or instability. For example, individuals like Trump and Putin lack square energy—they have no sturdy sense of self. Without that internal stability, they rely on external displays of power. When we cultivate square energy within ourselves, we no longer feel the need to act out; we are rooted in our own strength.
In a world full of uncertainty, square energy is a gift. It allows us to stand firm, set boundaries, and create clarity in both our lives and work. So the next time you feel rattled, draw a square. Let its stability guide you back to your center.
