Creating space for change
Transformation doesn’t happen in crowded, cluttered environments—whether in our minds, our lives, or the world around us. Space is what allows new ideas, perspectives, and actions to emerge.
During my graduate studies, I discovered just how critical space is for learning and growth. One striking example is the role black churches played during the civil rights movement. These churches were “free spaces,” places where people could gather safely, share ideas, and inspire one another. They provided a vital environment for strategy and collective action, fueling the movement for change.
Without those spaces, the momentum for social transformation might not have been possible.
On a personal level, creating space is just as important. If you’re feeling stuck, confused, or unsure of your next step, it’s often a sign that you need to pause and clear room for something new to emerge. Sometimes this means stepping back from the noise of daily life, letting go of distractions, or simply giving yourself permission to not have all the answers right away.
Transformation begins in the spaces we create. Whether it’s a literal space to think and reflect, or an inner willingness to stop and breathe, space is where possibility lives. The act of making room—no matter how small—can unlock the clarity and momentum needed for change.
What kind of space could you create today to invite transformation?
